Startuply v2.5 - Documentation

Responsive Multi-Purpose WordPress Theme

This theme is geared towards emerging startups, we are using it for our own project and website everyday, moreover we have studied a lot of additional startup websites examples to discover what works and what not to deliver the best solution for validating your business idea and getting first clients as fast as possible!

Installation

Package structure

After downloading the complete theme package from Themeforest (All files & Documentation) and unzipping it you should have the following files & folders:

  • package/Demodata/ directory with demo data
  • package/Documentation/ documentation files
  • package/Licensing/ license for WordPress and Startuply theme
  • package/PSD/ theme PSD files
  • package/startuply.zip main file to install the theme
  • package/startuply-child.zip child theme for easier customization

After you download ZIP file from ThemeForest you need to UNZIP it (extract it’s contents)

Installing via FTP

To install theme via FTP please follow these steps

  1. Unzip theme/startuply.zip main theme file anywhere on your computer
  2. Login to your website hosting via FTP client
  3. Navigate to your WordPress themes /wp-content/themes/ directory
  4. Upload the extracted startuply folder directly to the /wp-content/themes/folder
This type of install is commonly used since themes files are often quite big, we recommend using Filezilla FTP client for this.

Installing via WordPress

To install theme via WordPress Admin Dashboard please follow these steps:

  1. Login to your wordpress dashboard, go to WordPress Appearance > Themes section
  2. Click on Install Themes tab
  3. Click on Choose File button, and select main theme startuply.zip  file and click Install Now button.

This is the most convenient method but unfortunately doesn’t work on some web hosts due to their settings

Demo Data

1-click import

Your Startuply theme is a complete copy of our demo but you have to import demo data first before it becomes the same. Theme has very useful 1 click install option so you don’t have to worry about setting up your theme copy, it will be done automatically in less then 5 minutes!

  1. Click Startuply > Demo data section on the left from admin dashboard
  2. Click Import button
  3. Please wait until page finishes loading completely… DONE!

demo_data_1

Note : using this importer more then once can result in duplicate content! Works best on clean WP install

XML import (old way)

Also there is still an option to import the demo content in the default WordPress way, which might be useful if for any reason you can’t use 1 click install. With this option you will need to import the demo content by using provided XML export files. Please locate the files in theme-package/Demodata folder and then follow these steps:
  • Step 1 – Before you start make sure you have installed and activated the following plugins: WPBakery Visual Composer, Contact Form 7, Revolutoin Slider, Visual composer animations
  • Step 2 – Go to Tools > Import > Click “WordPress”. If you haven’t already installed the WordPress import tool, you will be asked to install it.
  • Step 3 – Once it’s installed, activate and run the plugin. Now you will see an option to upload your XML file, find and upload the startuply-all.xml file. This is recommended option, there are also separate content files (for posts/pages/custom posts) available for experienced users.
  • Step 4 – Next you need to pick which author the demo content should be associated with and more importantlymake sure to check the “Download and import file attachments” option.
  • Step 5 – Click submit, please note that this can sometimes take a few minutes to install.

demo_data_21demo_data_2121demo_data_22demo_data_23

Now when demo data is uploaded we will need to apply the finishing touches to your setup:

  • Touch 1 – Setup the new homepage
Go to Settings > Reading > Set “Front Page Displays” to A stactic Post > Choose the page called Homepage: default which we just imported from the demo XML file.
  • Touch 2 – Setup the menus
Go to Appearance > Menus > Select the menu called Left > Assign the menu to the Theme locations > Left Menu below
  • Touch 3 – Setup the Footer&Inner Header
Go to Startuply Options  > Inner Header/Footer and add the desired images/overlays to them
  • Touch 4 – Setup the blog
Go to Pages > Add New > enter a title, like “Blog page” > click Publish > go to Settings > Reading > select “Blog page” (or whatever you called your page) from the Posts Page dropdown > Click Save

settings

At this stage your website is fully functional and ready to use!

Setting WP menu

Normally if you use 1-click demo install the menus are assigned to their corresponding places, but in some cases they are not thus they don’t appear on the homepage and have to be set manually.

StartuplyWP supports 2 menu locations for normal WordPress menus:

  • Main (left menu): used for internal HOME, ABOUT, SERVICES, CONTACTS etc. links for scrolling navigation on homepage but external links can be added too of course
  • Extra (right menu) : used for LOGIN/SIGNUP, this menu is replaced by user account data when user is logged in
To setup the menus:
  • Step 1 – Navigate to the Appearance > Menus page.
  • Step 2 – Select the menu location you would like to edit in Select a menu to edit box
  • Step 3 – Name the new menu
  • Step 4 – Add menu items normally from the sidebar on the left.

menu_1menu_3menu_4menu_2

Usually for a one-page homepage you would need to add a simple “Link” element that has your linking section ID (that you have assigned in Visual Composer Page Builder for Row) for the URL input box (e.g. “http://your-website.com#team“) if you would like the menu to scroll down to “OUR TEAM” section.

If you don’t put website URL before the anchor tag – the menu won’t be working on internal pages. All other link types (external/wp pages/wp categories/etc are also working here of course)

* After setting up your menu, don’t forget to hit the “Save” button!
More info about WordPress menus can be found here: WordPress Menu Guide

API Integrations

In this section we are going to add various integration options for the theme itself, currently we have only 2 of them:

api_options

  • Google analytics – for your google tracking code
  • Mailchimp API key – this allows Form Manager shortcode to connect to your Mailchimp account and add new subscribers

Forms

Fast Signup & Leadgen

Generally these forms just send emails to the specified addressed on submit and save the submission data for later use, so the main purpose of them is to prospect users interest in your product and connect with them later on, just that.

all_forms

Any of them can be used as a plain contact form easily, all forms are super responsive too!

Currently our demo data has these pre-set forms:

Fast signup3 horizontal and 2 vertically aligned forms for fast user signups. Usually used to gather new users subscriptions or waiting lists fast and then work with them through email. Waiting lists, beta lists, pre-launch campaign, general interest of not yet launched startup this is what these forms are usually used
Lead generation3 big and bold forms for more detailed user data collection. Usually used for new services ordering, callback requests, quote estimations, etc.
Contact1 clear inline form to fit any place in your theme or widget zone that collects users feedback

There are also Login/Registrations form in the theme built-in but they are different, and we will cover them in the “WP Login/registration forms” section

Adding form on page

All forms can be added in any part of the page and are managed with our “Form Manager” shortcode, just add it on a page:

fomr_manager_vc

then choose which form to use and edit it’s settings (these are per-form so you can have multiple forms on a page with different settings)

form_manager_settings

Currently with our Form Manager you can:

  1. Choose which form to render
  2. Show/Hide form on submit
  3. Redirect to any url on submit
  4. Integrate it with Mailchimp (and choose wether or not to use Double Opt-in option)
  5. … more options and API support are coming up soon!

Forms submission data

All form submissions are saved automatically by default, it also takes all available form fields on submit, so no need to do additional setup for each form for this to work.  After saving you can export the data in any format you like (csv/xml/html/etc..) or display it with a shortcode anywhere on a website

cfdbplugin.com– official website

form_submissions

Note: while we are using this plugin to save form submissions it’s default title “Contact Form DB” in WordPress dashboard is changed to “Forms Data” in our theme. This is done to make things more comprehensive for starters.

WP Login/Registration

StartuplyWP also includes custom login/register forms that are set as Page Templates per page. The reason we did this is that now you can have a COMPLETELY CUSTOM user admin dashboard with our theme. That is to say these forms take the full control of user’s logins/registrations and when they can access specific website area where normally your startup heart should be, how awesome is that!

When logged in the contents of wp-content/themes/startuply/admin/index.php file displayed and you can put literally ANYTHING there or include ANY PHP scripts or frameworks you like, or add completely separate HTML admin template if needed. All theme fonts and scripts are loaded on this level so you can also use them to develop your startup. Or you can put redirect inside admin/index.php to other directory on same domain and check if user is logged in there (WP Cookies), then show them their new dashboard!

login_formregformmy_accountunder_construction

  • User login & control panel – this page template is used solely for user control panel with login, and it shows contents of /admin/index.php file after successful login where normally your startup dashboard should reside. Inside this directory you can add any PHP files and libraries or make completely separate site if needed.
  • User registration – this is used for registering users inside WordPress using default functions and StartuplyWP styled form

Note: beautiful admin dashboard from theme description is currently not available as a real admin page, but we are working on it.

Newsletter – legacy

This is a legacy form that we are planning to remove and put it under our new “Form manager” in the nearest update. But currently all it does is adding users email to your Mailchimp list, just place it as a shortcode to any page, adjust the settings and you’re done, but we would highly recommend to use new “Form Manager” since it is more flexible, easier to setup and customize, captures more user data and of course has Mailchimp integration enabled

Page Templates

WP page layouts

The theme currently has several page templates available:

  • Fullwidth– 100% fullwidth main template
  • Fullwidth, no footer– 100% fullwidth main template without footer
  • Boxed, no sidebar – boxed page template without sidebar
  • Boxed, sidebar right – boxed page template with right sidebar
  • Boxed, sidebar left – boxed page with template left sidebar
  • User login & control panel – this page template is used solely for user control panel with login, and it shows contents of /admin/index.php file after successful login where normally your startup dashboard should reside. Inside this directory you can add any PHP files and libraries or make completely separate site if needed.
  • User registration – this is used for registering users inside WordPress using default functions and StartuplyWP styled form

page_templates

Normally you would want to use Fullwidth page template most of the time for main pages since it allows fullwidth sections with Row shortcode but you also can use Row -> Stretch setting to add boxed content inside fullwidth layout. Boxed layouts are commonly used for inner pages

Homepage templates

These are our demo pages saved in a shortcodes, so basically every time you create a new page with Visual Composer you can instantly populate it with the same data and shortcodes as our demo pages have and then just delete the not needed sections, add new ones (use Templaterra, see “Section templates” guide) and edit the other ones. this is also the easiest way to duplicate the current homepages if needed

Section templates

These are pre-set templates for Visual Composer’s plugin Templatera. It drastically increases page creation time and allows you to easily create any template needed. These templates are added to a page the same way as Visual Composer shortcodes do but they hold more data inside them

templatera_main

As seen above all current website sections (headers/content/sliders/etc) are there, so basically you can just click on needed ones and they will be added to your current page instantly while maintaining the same looks and settings as on our main demo! This is really a great thing to use.

Also, you can create your own ones or edit the ones that come with our demodata easily:

Plugins

Easy Digital Downloads

Since version 2.2 the theme has been integrated with Easy Digital Downloads plugin, and not just that – we have walked an extra mile and created some additional features and options thta are not to be found in ANY WordPress startup theme to date. Which makes this theme an even better match for a startup of any kind.

edd

There are several points of integration:

  1. The EDD templates are residing in theme folder (startuply/edd_templates). This is how products are displayed
  2. Custom view styles (startuply/engine/extend/edd/edd.php). This is for Material/Grid/List views
  3. EDD for VC connector (startuply/engine/extend/edd/edd_vc). This just constructs strings of shortcodes for EDD to process (do_shortcode)

Other then that we have tried to make the integration as native as possible, to make it easier to work with, but we are looking into ways of making it more modular.

Please proceed for more detailed guidance on EDD setup

Visual Composer

vc_logo_smaller

StartuplyWP uses Visual Composer plugin to handle content creation, this is most common structure and a standard in WordPress theme development nowadays that is quickly expanding, almost 95% of all new themes at Themeforest are now using it, so we highly recommend you to take some time to learn the basics to unleash the full power of this awesome plugin. After you learn how to use it – new page creation will be very easy and fast for you

Templatera

This is a premium add-on for Visual Composer that allows you to save and use custom templates, for example you can create a set of 3 visual composer shortcodes (Section title + Text), save it as Default section and then just add to any page for easier content creation. Even complete pages can be saved that way for later re-use.

Forms (Contact Form 7 )

Startuply uses Contact 7 plugin that we renamed to “Forms” in admin dashboard to manage forms, so once you have installed the theme and activated all needed plugins for it just head over to “Forms” section in admin dashboard and add as many forms as you like. This plugin controls only several forms that are placed as website content

contact_7

All forms come with pre-configured settings and messages with theme demo data, so you can easily get a grip on what to change where

form_anatomy

While you can change the forms anyway you like there are 2 field names that are reserved by StartuplyWP theme:

FULLNAME – upon submit this value is processed by a function to parse out users First name and Last name

EMAIL – user email, always a required field

FNAME – user First name, optional

LNAME – user Last name, optional

if you see those in form contents – please do not change this tags, otherwise the theme won’t know how to distinguish the fields for API calls

Note: while we are using this plugin to create new forms it’s default title “Contact 7” in WordPress dashboard is changed to “Forms” in our theme. This is done since we use some additional extensions to the default plugin that pushes it beyond simple contact form making to something bigger, and the new name also makes it more comprehensive for starters.

Forms Data (Contact Form DB)

This is a custom extension for “Contact 7” plugin that allows to save any form with any fields to the website database upon successful submit along with service data like IP and date. All form submissions are saved automatically by default, it also takes all available form fields on submit, so no need to do additional setup for each form for this to work.  After saving you can export the data in any format you like (csv/xml/html/etc..) or display it with a shortcode anywhere on a website

Note: while we are using this plugin to save form submissions it’s default title “Contact Form DB” in WordPress dashboard is changed to “Forms Data” in our theme. This is done to make things more comprehensive for starters.

Homepages

General

Theme comes with several homepages pre-built for you, just open any of them and start editing

homepages

  • Default – most common layout for startups, click-through header with app screenshot works best in most cases background can be changed through Row settings
  • Default (no animation) – same as default page but has no animation set (Note: animation can be also disabled on entire website through theme options!)
  • Video background – gorgeous fullwidth YouTube header, this is set by using Row settings and has several control
  • Clickthrough – minimal clickthrough template enhanced with CSS Gradient (set in Page Section – Row settings)
  • Email signup – Signup form with app screenshot, great converting one
  • Revolution slider – if you would like to use Revolution slider then this one is for you. the slider is added through Visual Composer shortcodes normally – there is the shortcode named the same. Then just choose the needed slider from the shortcode dropdown list

How to change section background?

Easy, just head over to “Page section” (Row shortcode) settings and do it like so:

home_bg

How to change video background?

Easy, just head over to “Page section” (Row shortcode) settings and do it like so:

video_home

How do i assign homepage to my website main page?

Easy, just head over to Settings > Reading and choose a front page

How to duplicate pages?

These are our demo pages saved in a shortcodes, so basically every time you create a new page with Visual Composer you can instantly populate it with the same data and shortcodes as our demo pages have and then just delete the not needed sections, add new ones (use Templaterra, see “Section templates” guide) and edit the other ones. this is also the easiest way to duplicate the current homepages if needed

demo_templates

the alternative way to duplicate a page is to either use  this plugin or by switching to Classic mode -> Text and copying the raw contents to a new page in the same manner

Portfolio

Startuply has an extensive configuration options for portfolio items and the design. Please check that you have enabled Visual composer to be used on the portfolio pages at Settings > Visual Composer > General settingsotherwise your portfolio descriprion would be a plain text and you won’t be able to customize it

doc_6

To create a new portfolio item:

  • Step 1 – navigate to Portfolio >Add New section from the left menu in admin dashboard.
  • Step 2 – type in title of the new item, choose categories
  • Step 3 – add portfolio thumbnail on the right (will be shown in the Gallery grid)
  • Step 4 – below the thumbnail chooser box is a drop-down where you can set the behavior (details below)
  • Step 5 – choose the thumbnail orientation in the grid (4 presets currently)

Portfolio thumbnail behavior:

  • Opens the project item – redirects to a separate portfolio page
  • Opens in a lightbox – opens larger thumbnail version in a lightbox (no redirect)
  • Opens a custom link – redirects to a custom website
  • Opens a video in a lightbox – opens a video in a lightbox (no redirect)

This way you can choose any eye-catching thumbnail and then configure it’s behaviour on click which is very useful.

doc_5

The large textarea inside the new Portfolio item creation page is only displayed when the thumbnail behaviour is set to “Opens the project item” the most exciting part that Visual Composer can be (and should!) used here to create a stunning portfolio item page, you can then save the template as Templaterra template (open Templates->Save current page as template) to use it on all other portfolio items to create new identically designed items fast.

doc_7

Don’t forger to enable Visual Composer for Portfolio items to be able to edit them

eCommerce

Setup

After theme normal installation a few extra steps are needed for eCommerce module (this is temporary for 2.2 version) to make your copy 100% as a demo.

Firstly, please go to EDD products -> Settings then under General tab put a tick on the first option and click Save below. This will put your store to test mode so no live transactions will be accidentally made while you are setting things up

edd-setup1

Secondly, under the Payment Gateway tab, please tick Paypal Standart and paste your Paypal Sandbox (more on that below) seller account (where money will be stored). Failing to do so, or leaving it blank will result in error while it tries to process your payment

edd-setup2

Thirdly, if you wish to customize the emails go to Emails tab

edd-email

The templates that we use

Purchase receipt:

Dear {fullname},

Thank you for your purchase, the details can be found below:

{download_list}

The receipt copy is also available online:

{receipt_link}

{sitename}

Sale notification:

Hello,

You have new sale:

{download_list}

Purchased by: {fullname}
Email: {user_email}
Amount: {price}
Payment Method: {payment_method}

Have a great day!

And finally, under Misc you can force user to register a WP account before chekout (don’t forget to also choose show “Registration/Login Forms” or they won’t be able to register) and change default buy button text (which is “Add to cart”) along with other stuff

edd-setup3

We strongly advise to create Paypal Sandbox account to test all payments before going live, it is basically the same Paypal but with virtual purses with unlimited money and 100% the same interface and API as the real one, more info can be found here:

That’s all! Now your website is ready for business, all products, checkout, eCommerce should be fully working and selling!

All products can be edited as per your liking, and recurrents are basically it is the same product as a downloadable one, but with additional extensive configuration options: e.g.: you can specify the period of a recurring payment, setup fee, installments, etc and more options for default products.

EDD shortcode

Theme has it’s own connector with Visual Composer that ensures the ease of integration with Easy Digital Downloads. This new shortcode should be used to build any default EDD page like downloads, checkout, history, receipt and everything else to be put on any page with Visual Composer.

As a matter of fact, this new VC shortcode constructs default EDD shortcodes with needed options, that are later processed with EDD itself. Settings are very extensive and comprehensive more tutorials on them will be added later

The below example lists all products under “Downloads” category on homepage

Single product (previously Pricing Table)

We have revised the previous “Pricing table” shortcode to make it more powerful and easy to use. Most of all it now lists just a single product, putting the column and paddings controls back to Visual Composer. Now each shortcode = a single product.

The shortcode now supports two product types:

  1. EDD product – display any EDD product here! This option has a full integration with Easy Digital Downloads, in a way that you can select an EDD product from a dropdown and then it will be processing the purchases as normal!
  2. Custom HTML – custom fields for any text and any buy now button . This is useful when you are using pre-made snippets for “Buy now” buttons like from Stripe/Paypal/Skrill/Gumroad any other provider. Important! In this way no sales or downlaods will be tracked since this will not have any integration with EDD.
